ABOUT FREEMASONRY
A tradition of values, learning and service
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations.
It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry. This information describes Freemasonry as it is practised under the United Grand Lodge of England, which administers the District of North Island, New Zealand.
Freemasonry is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values. Members are taught its principles, moral lessons and self-knowledge through ritual dramas that follow ancient forms and use stonemasons’ customs and tools as allegorical guides.
Freemasonry instils in its members a moral and ethical approach to life: its values are based on respect, integrity, friendship, and charity. Members are urged to regard the interests of the family as paramount, while also showing concern for people, caring for the less fortunate and helping those in need.

You must be able to affirm a belief in a Supreme Being. This requirement is deliberately phrased to include people from a diverse range of faiths and beliefs, and you do not need to be an active practitioner of any particular religion.
A Lodge meeting normally has two parts. The first deals with Lodge business, including minutes, correspondence, finances, membership matters and charitable activities. The second is ceremonial and may include initiating new members, guiding members through the stages of Freemasonry, or installing the Lodge’s Master and officers.
Costs vary from Lodge to Lodge. They can include an initiation fee, an annual subscription, regalia in due course and the cost of dinner after meetings. Members may give to charity, but contributions should always be within their means and the amount is entirely up to the individual.
No. Giving preference to fellow members would be unacceptable. On joining, each new member states that he expects no material gain from membership.
